bittersweetasian:

It’s online for a limited time so catch it while you can y’all!

Description: In celebration of Asian Heritage Month, HBO presents a collection of perspectives from a diverse group of Asian Americans.

I’m in the middle of watching this right now so don’t have much of a commentary yet, but so far so goooooood!

UPDATE:

Favorite moment 1:

“I’m a Chinese American, I’m an openly gay Christian minister”

Favorite moment 2:

Made in Korea tattoo on right ass cheek

Light bulb moment:

The first three women (half of the women in the documentary) mention their husband-less-ness. I think Kit, a transgender, makes a really good point. He says,

“As a female, my mom expected me to study really hard and then graduate and then find a partner and start a family, but now that I’m a male, she talks to me mostly about working really hard, getting a good job, making enough money to provide for a family.”

There are just different gender expectations…

This is scary. The message I’m getting: Successful Asian American women have a hard time getting husbands. Ok alright, this is not necessarily the message the documentary might be promoting but presenting.

So yea… I’m sad that there’s still this perception that if you are a single women hitting 30, you’re getting old and an anomaly and should get married to a man. asap. find that and hit that and pop out a baby. This doesn’t even go into the heteronormative perceptions of relationships. I mean must a woman find a man? What’s ironic is that women might want to get married.. but can’t because their partners are women.

Otherwise:

Touched on A LOT of other issues. I loved it. Please watch it.

I’ll go check it out, I think.
